First Chapter: The Suicide Club - Introduction
“Hi,” Cristel said. “Just wanted to warn you there's going to be a special club meeting. Jennifer is sending out the notice soon. You have nothing to worry about. Jennifer will never find out you were involved. I will handle everything .”
“Ok,” Raquel said. “I expect Jennifer is pretty pissed about Christine.”
“She’s livid,” Cristel said. “But I’ll take care of her and I’ve made backup plans if things don’t work out. The less you know the better. Remember you don’t know about Christine.”
“Ok,” Raquel said. “I’ll remember.”
The next morning the encrypted email arrived from Jennifer while Raquel was at work. Raquel went to the ladies room to decrypt and read the mail. The message was short. It just said:
“There will be a special meeting of the Suicide Club at noon next Saturday. This is a mandatory meeting for all members. Please respond if you can attended. If there are conflicts, the meeting will be rescheduled. The meeting will be at a private villa located off Red Desert Road about 40 minutes drive from town. Casual dress is encouraged. Directions will be sent later once everyone confirms their attendance.”
This was rather mysterious, but Raquel quickly sent an encrypted reply saying she could attend and went back to work.
Raquel arrived at the villa a few minutes before noon. There were already several cars out front and the main gate was open a bit.
Raquel went in the gate and found Emily, Claire and Hailey already there in the courtyard.
“Hi Raquel,” Emily said. “I see you found the place. Any idea what's going on?”
“No clue,” Raquel said.
“I guess we'll just have to wait for the others,” Hailey said.
A few minutes later Cristel walked out of the house followed by Jennifer carrying a briefcase.
“I see we all are here on time,” Jennifer said.
“What about Christine?” Hailey asked.
“Christine is no longer with us,” Jennifer said. “That's what this meeting is about. Christine participated in an unauthorized suicide game with Cristel and … well … lost her head. I have met with Cristel and she would like to remain in the club. To stay in the club she must perform the standard punishment.”
“This is a severe violation of the club rules,” Jennifer said. “So Cristel will receive the most severe penalty.”
Jennifer reached in her case and pulled out a revolver.
“Three pulls of the trigger at Russian Roulette,” Jennifer announced.
“Three?” Cristel asked. “I thought you said two.”
“I decided for your offense it must be three,” Jennifer said.
Jennifer put one bullet into the gun.
Jennifer handed the gun to Cristel.
Cristel spun the chamber and closed it.
Cristel put the barrel in her mouth and squeezed the trigger.
There was only a click.
“Two more,” Jennifer said as Cristel spun the chamber again and closed it.
Cristel put the gun in her mouth and squeezed the trigger.
The gun exploded Cristel’s head blowing her brains out on the ground behind her.
Jennifer raised a fist and smiled as the others stared at Cristel in shock.
“Let this be a lesson to everyone,” Jennifer said. “I'm already working on recruiting new members, so don't worry, we will have another meeting soon.”
Jennifer turned and walked back into the house.
The girls walked out through the gate in silence.
“You want to all stop for coffee and talk things over?” Emily asked.
“Sure,” Raquel said.
“I'd love to,” Hailey said. “Which one?”
“There is a nice one on State Street just past the Post Office,” Emily said.
“Ok, we'll meet there,” Raquel said.
“What the fuck just happened?” Emily said after they were all seated.
“What did Cristel do to make Jennifer so angry?” Claire asked.
“Well, I have a guess,” Hailey said. “Cristel had some guillotines built. Jennifer said that Christine lost her head. I knew Cristel was going to test the guillotines, but I thought she had a volunteer who was not a club member. Not sure what happened.”
“You think Cristel executed Christine with a guillotine?” Emily asked.
“Cristel had six guillotines,” Hailey said. “It was suppose to be something like Russian Roulette but with guillotines. The blade would only fall on one of the guillotines. I guess Christine picked the wrong guillotine.”
“So it was some kind of a suicide game?” Emily asked.
“That's what Jennifer said,” Hailey replied.
“Wow,” Claire said. “That sounds wild, but why was Jennifer so angry?”
“Cristel was going to challenge Jennifer to Russian roulette for control of the club,” Hailey said. “She had survived ten meetings. Jennifer just eliminated her competitor before she could challenge her.”
“Ah,” Emily said. “That makes sense.”
“If Cristel had survived today, I'd guess she would have immediately challenged Jennifer,” Hailey said.
“I guess we will never get to see the guillotines now,” Claire said.
“You've been awfully quiet Raquel,” Emily said. “What do you think?”
“Yeah,” Raquel said. “Well … er … I was there...”
“What!” exclaimed Emily. “You were where?”
“Jennifer doesn't knows I was there, so we have to keep it secret,” Raquel said.
“Of course we'll keep it secret,” Emily said. “None of us would tell Jennifer.”
“Cristel, Christine and I played a suicide game with the guillotines,” Raquel said. “Six guillotines, three of which were empty. Christine picked the wrong one.”
“Wow, was it exciting?” Claire asked.
“Oh god yes,” Raquel said. “Much more exciting than drawing cards.”
“I can only imagine,” Claire said. “Why didn't Cristel offer the guillotines to the club?”
“She did,” Hailey said. “But Jennifer is a stick in the mud, something about not being traditional.”
“I'm starting to wish that Cristel had gotten control of the club,” Claire said. “Is there anyone who can challenge her?”
“I can after one more meeting,” Hailey said.
“Do we even need Jennifer?” Emily asked. “I mean when suicide was illegal and the club was underground, you needed people with pull to dispose of the bodies, but now that suicide is completely legal why do we need Jennifer?”
“I saw Cristel deal with the police to dispose of Christine body,” Raquel said. “It was simple. We could do it. Just need a little paper work.”
“Exactly, we can have our own suicide club,” Emily said. “There are hanging poker clubs that will take care of everything or we can do the paperwork.”
“Need to learn how to play poker,” Raquel laughed.
“Don't worry about that,” Emily said. “Clair and I can teach you how to play.”
“I heard they're opening a Russian Roulette club in Reno,” Claire asked.
“The club was mostly hanging and drowning,” Hailey said. “But that was because they could do both on yachts and dispose of the bodies at sea before suicide was legal.”
“So are you all joining the New Suicide Club?” Emily asked.
“For sure,” Clair said.
“Absolutely,” Raquel said.
“I’m in,” Haily said.
“Then you should send Jennifer a PM next week saying you are withdrawing from the club,” Emily said. “I’ll start looking at the hanging poker clubs around, trying to find some other players. All of you can do the same. We'll meet in a couple of weeks to decide what to do.”
“I don't think I have everyone's number,” Raquel said. “We should exchange numbers.”
“Good idea,” Emily said. “Everyone stay in touch.”
